The Niamtougou Airport is located 4 kilometers north of the Togolese town of Niamtougou in the district of Baga. The airport is the second largest in Togo and, alongside the larger Lomé airport, the only Togolese airport with an asphalt runway.

Establishment

Construction of Niamtougou Airport began in 1977; In 1980 the airport was completed. The project was financed from the income from Togolese phosphate exports and loans from foreign development aid. The airport was supposed to help with the economic development of the structurally weak northern Togos and the Kara region , which was an important center of power for Togo's long-time dictator Gnassingbé Eyadéma from nearby Pya . However, due to a lack of funds, the airport was never used as planned.

use

In September 1986 the airport served the French military as a base for the Opération Épervier in Chad, today it functions both as a private airport and for flights by members of the government and as a base for the Togolese air force. Airlines do not fly to the airport. The operation and maintenance are carried out with a state grant of 150 million CFA francs (228,000 euros), which is criticized by the opposition in view of the deficit state budget.
