View of the airport from the air

The airport Strigino ( Russian Международный аэропорт Стригино ) is an international commercial airport in Russia , of some 15 kilometers southwest of the center of the metropolis Nizhny Novgorod is located.

general description

Terminal building

Strigino Airport opened on July 15, 1923 and originally served primarily as an airfield for connections between Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow . It has had the status of a commercial airport since 1939. This makes Strigino not only one of the oldest airports in the Volga region, but also in all of Russia. In 1993, Strigino acquired international airport status. In addition to domestic Russian flights, a direct connection to Frankfurt am Main was offered up to September 2015, and domestic charter flights are mainly handled here.

Due to the relative proximity of Nizhny Novgorod to Moscow (around 430 km), Strigino Airport is also one of the reserve airports for Moscow's four passenger airports. In addition, parts of the airport are still used as a military airfield.

Although Nizhny Novgorod is one of the largest cities in Russia, the number of passengers at Strigino Airport is relatively low. In 2007, only a little more than 280,000 passengers were handled. This is due, among other things, to the airport's infrastructure, which is no longer considered up-to-date. For this reason, there are short to medium-term plans to extensively convert the terminal buildings, including the construction of a new terminal for up to three million passengers annually. The Moscow city council's original plans to invest up to US $ 100 million in Strigino's infrastructure were abandoned at the end of 2008. In the meantime, Renova Holding around Wiktor Wekselberg is planning to build a new passenger terminal at Nizhny Novgorod Airport.

In 2007 the net profit of the operating company MANN was 13,679 million rubles , which is an increase of more than sixteen times over the previous year.

Transport links

The airport is located in the south of the Nizhny Novgorod metropolitan area and so far can only be reached by car, regular buses or minibuses (so-called marshrutki ). Bus route 11 and minibus route T.29 connect the airport to the Park Kultury metro station , while bus number 20 goes to Moscow train station . As part of the planned modernization of the airport, the construction of a railway branch line to the terminal (based on the model of Moscow's Domodedovo , Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports ) is planned.
