The airport tunnel is a 1215 meter long, double-lane railway tunnel in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland . Together with the Hagenholz tunnel to the northeast, it forms the central element of the Zurich airport line ( Oerlikon - Bassersdorf ) of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), which opened in 1980 and runs largely underground .

The construction of the airport line including the airport train station was decided at the end of the 1960s and began in 1971 as part of the third construction phase (1970–1976) of Zurich Airport . The airport line finally opened on June 1, 1980, as the first of its kind in Switzerland, and took over the entire intercity traffic between Zurich and Winterthur . Although designed as a pure intercity route without intermediate stations, since the start of the Zurich S-Bahn in May 1990, S-Bahn trains have also been running on the route.
