The "Severomorsk-1" military airfield is an airfield in the far northwest of Russia , south of Severomorsk , Murmansk Oblast .
Until 1951 the airfield was called Ваенга-1 (Wajenga-1), named after the nearby river Wajenga . Ka-27 helicopters and various models of maritime patrols are stationed at the airfield . The smaller Severomorsk-2 airfield is 5 km to the southwest; it has been closed since 1998. The airfield Severomorsk-3 is located 22 km southeast and is home to long-range bombers and fighter planes.
