The airfield Tal Afar is located eleven kilometers south of the Iraqi city of Tal Afar and about seventy kilometers west of Mosul .

The partly asphalted and partly concrete runway is 3000 m long and 44 m wide. At the ends of the runway there are a total of twelve Hardened Aircraft Shelters or aircraft bunkers of Yugoslav design, so-called "Yugos". The airfield itself was laid out based on the Soviet model before 1985 .

The base of the Iraqi Air Force was occupied by the Islamic State and was captured on November 17, 2016 by the Shiite militia al-Hashd al-She'bī advancing from the southeast as part of the Battle of Mosul .
