Lists of aviation accidents

The Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales aircraft accident occurred on April 14, 1976 . On a flight of the Argentine state oil production company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales from Rincón de los Sauces to Cutral-Có , an Avro 748 crashed that day after a wing was torn off in flight. All 34 people on board were killed in the accident.

plane

The machine was an Avro 748-105 Srs. 1 from British production. The machine had the factory number 1540 and the machine was rolled out on March 6, 1962. On June 24, the machine was delivered to Aerolíneas Argentinas. The aircraft was registered with the aircraft registration LV-HHB and was given the name Ciudad de Corrientes . On August 30, 1962, a fatal incident occurred with the aircraft when a door was torn out in flight on Aerolíneas Argentinas flight 737 and a flight attendant was sucked out of the aircraft. The badly damaged machine was repaired and continued to operate at Aerolíneas Argentinas. Later the Avro was given to the Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales.

The twin-engine regional airliner was equipped with two Rolls-Royce Dart Mk. 514 turboprop engines . At the time of the accident, the machine had a cumulative operating performance of 25,753 operating hours with 24,130 take-offs and landings.

Flight history

On the day of the accident, the Avro 748 "Ciudad de Corrientes" was used to fly out personnel from the state oil production company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales (YPF) . First, a flight from Cutral-Có to Rincón de Los Sauces was carried out, which started at 2:00 p.m. and after a flight without any particular abnormalities landed at its destination 40 minutes later. At 3:55 p.m. the plane took off for the return flight to Cutral-Có. There were 31 passengers and 3 crew members on board.

the accident

At 4:23 p.m., the crew contacted air traffic control in Cutral-Có, inquired about the weather data and asked for landing permission with an estimated arrival at 4:33 p.m. At an altitude of about 4,000 feet, the starboard wing of the machine suddenly broke off, then the starboard elevator too. The plane entered a downward spiral and crashed to the ground. All 34 people on board were killed.

root cause

The cause of the accident was found to be a structural failure in the form of the right wing tearing off during an otherwise normal flight. The structural failure occurred between the third and twelfth longitudinal ribs of the wing and in the area of the outer rib of the engine mount.

It was determined that the material from which the wings were made met the load requirements. Rather, the cause of the fatigue cracks was due to the stress concentration on the fracture point, which resulted from the design of the wings. For the same reason, the damage pattern reached a critical level earlier than expected. The cracks remained undetected and ultimately led to the critical situation, which was due to the fact that the manufacturer's maintenance instructions for the affected assembly were too imprecise, so that the operator had not recognized the crack formation in time.
