The air accident of a Boeing 737 of the Indian Airlines in Rampurhat occurred on May 10, 1980. That day was the Boeing 737-2A8 Adv. (VT-EDR) of Indian Airlines , with a domestic airliner from Bagdogra to Kolkata was conducted get into severe turbulence. Two passengers were killed and ten inmates injured in the incident.

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 737-2A8 Adv., Which was 4 years and 8 months old at the time of the accident. The machine was assembled at the Boeing plant in Renton (Washington) and completed its maiden flight on September 26, 1975, before being delivered to Indian Airlines on October 8, 1975. The aircraft had the factory number 21163, it was the 434th Boeing 737 from ongoing production. The machine was certified with the aircraft registration VT-EDR . The twin- engined narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-9A engines.

Passengers and crew

For the flight to Calcutta, 126 adult passengers and two children were seated on board the plane in Bagdogra. These were accompanied by six crew members. The 46-year-old captain of the aircraft had 14,779.15 hours of flight experience at the time of the accident.

Course of the flight and course of the accident

A domestic scheduled flight from Bagdogra to Calcutta was carried out with the machine. When the machine was over Rampurhat , it flew into a weather zone with considerable turbulence around 3:30 p.m. local time. While the pilots tried to avoid the thunderstorm, several occupants were thrown from their seats and seriously injured.

Several passengers were seriously injured in the incident. There were 12 seriously injured. Two adult passengers died from serious injuries in the hospital. Eight other adult passengers and two crew members suffered serious injuries. The remaining four crew members, 116 adult passengers and two children suffered no or only minor injuries.

root cause

The unexpected flight of the aircraft into an area with severe turbulence was determined to be the cause of the accident. It could be determined that the machine had been on a flight route that lay between two thunderstorm cells. This happened because the air traffic control did not warn the crew in good time about difficult weather conditions.

The whereabouts of the machine

The outside of the machine remained undamaged in the incident, but it was significantly damaged in the cabin area. The aircraft was repaired and continued to be operated by Indian Airlines. From January 12, 1996, the machine was leased to Blue Dart Aviation . The aircraft was then converted into a cargo machine and continued to operate as such. From December 1998 ICICI Ltd. Owner of the machine and leased it to Blue Dart Aviation. On August 8, 2001, the aircraft was re-registered under the new aircraft registration number VT-BDJ and operated with the new name Vision II by Blue Dart Aviation. In 2008, the Boeing was finally decommissioned and transferred to the Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science Chennai .
