plane

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 737-2A1, which was 6 years and 10 months old at the time of the accident. The machine was finally assembled at the Boeing plant in Renton , Washington State, and completed its maiden flight on October 17, 1980 with the test number N8286V before it was delivered to LAN Chile in the same month. The aircraft had the factory number 22602, it was the 611. Boeing 737 from ongoing production. The machine was certified with the aircraft registration CC-CHJ and christened Arica . The twin- engined , narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-17 engines.

Inmates

There were 27 passengers on board. The crew consisted of a flight captain, a first officer and only one flight attendant.

the accident

As it approached Calama Airport, the plane flew against the sun, which blinded the captain. When he let the machine touch the ground, the landing gear buckled and the fuselage slid across the ground and broke. Of the 33 occupants on board, one passenger was killed. Half an hour after the incident, a fire broke out that completely destroyed the machine.

Victim

The only victim of the accident was a 41-year-old American who worked as a representative for Caterpillar's South America market in Chile. The overweight man had passed out after the impact and the other passengers could not have pulled him out of his seat when the fire broke out.

Cause of accident

It turned out that the runway had been moved 880 meters due to construction work. This was beyond the knowledge of the master, who landed the machine 520 meters from the relocated runway threshold. While he landed the machine virtually blind, he was convinced that he would let it touch down on the runway.
