The first flight with the aircraft registration PK-XCQ was carried out on January 17, 1980. The delivery to the Sabang Merauke Raya Air Charter with the new registration number PK-ZAI took place on August 23, 1980, at the time it was the first machine of this type that went into operation with the airline. The twin-engine STOL - regional aircraft was equipped with two turboprop -Triebwerken type Garrett TPE331-10HR equipped, which were equipped with four-leaf propellers.

Passengers and crew

For the domestic flight, 14 passengers were seated in the machine; the cockpit crew consisted of a captain and a first officer. No flight attendants were provided on this regional flight. The accident occurred when another passenger, who had missed the time to board, tried to get on board afterwards.

the accident

After boarding was completed, the pilots started the engines to taxi from the gate to the runway. Suddenly a man ran out of the airport building and towards the plane. As he ran towards the machine, he ran into the aircraft's left propeller and was killed in the process. The machine was only slightly damaged.

Accident investigation

The investigation into the accident revealed that the man killed was a passenger who was booked for the flight. The man had arrived at the airport late and tried to catch the flight. It was suspected that the man entered the tarmac via a VIP room that was not guarded at the time.

context

It was the second fatal propeller incident involving a CASA C-212 Aviocar in Indonesian regional air traffic, which occurred within a few months. In December 2001, a handler at Juvai Semaring Airport sustained fatal injuries while unloading a plane.

The whereabouts of the machine

The aircraft, which was only slightly damaged, was repaired after the accident and continued to be used in SMAC's regional air traffic. There were two more incidents, the last, again fatal incident, the machine was destroyed:

  • On November 30, 2005, the machine was involved in another incident when it rolled over 60 meters over the end of the runway and into a swamp on a flight from Medan at Sinabang-Lasikin Airport . All 12 passengers and three crew members survived the incident, the fuselage and wings were damaged in several places and the propeller blades of the right propeller were bent after they came into contact with a concrete fence post. The extent of the damage was nevertheless classified as "minor" and the machine was repaired again.
