Fluoromethane , the simplest representative of the fluoroalkanes
1,4-difluorobutane , with two fluorine atoms

The fluoroalkanes form a group of halogenated alkanes in which one or more hydrogen atoms have been replaced by fluorine atoms . The basic alkane structure can be either straight or branched. If all hydrogen atoms are completely replaced by fluorine atoms, the group of perfluorocarbons is obtained .

The fluoroalkanes can also be divided into primary , secondary and tertiary fluoroalkanes.
