Fogarty catheter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fogarty catheter (according to Thomas J. Fogarty , American Surgeon) is an approximately 75 cm long plastic - catheter with a balloon of different diameter at the end provided with a NaCl / heparin can be filled solution and to remove a blood clot from a Blood vessel ( embolectomy ) is used. During an operation, the catheter is pushed into an opened vessel over the blood clot and filled with an NaCl / heparin solution. The balloon now lying on the intima can take the thromboembolic material with it on its way back to the incision site, whereby the clot can be pulled out of the vessel via the surgically created opening and removed.
