Fomboni is the third largest city in the Comoros with 18,277 inhabitants (as of 2012) . It is located on the north coast of the island of Mohéli , whose main and most populous city it is, protected by an offshore coral reef. In good weather conditions there is a line of sight to the other main islands of Grande Comore and Anjouan .
The cityscape is characterized by simple, one-story houses along the nameless main street. The city has the only airport on the island, a small port with a simple shipyard on the beach, a post office, a bank, a covered market in the style of a mosque, a state primary school, a hotel, a pharmacy, a gas station, and a branch of the Alliance française , a soccer field and a few smaller shops and hostels.
