Fonteghetto della Farina

Fonteghetto della Farina , also known as Fondaco della Farina , is a former flour warehouse in Venice in the Italian region of Veneto . It is located in the Sestiere San Marco , facing the east end of the Grand Canal next to the Giardini Reali di Venezia and the Palazzina Selva , near St. Mark's Square . Today the Port Authority of Venice is housed there.

history

The building was erected in 1492 and served as a warehouse for grain meal to supply the city with food as a replacement for an earlier, smaller warehouse. Inside everyone was allowed to sell flour, while outside it was not allowed. The Fonteghetto di Farina was depicted by a number of well-known painters, including Canaletto . From 1756 to 1877 the academy for painting was also housed in the house, part of which was still used for selling flour.

description

The two-storey building has five large arched windows (formerly a vestibule) on the facade facing the Grand Canal on the ground floor , next to which the Ponte de l'Accademia dei Pittori spans the Rio dei Giardinetti . On the upper floor there is a triple arched window in the middle and is flanked by two pairs of similar single windows. The side facade facing the Rio dei Giardinetti shows a large, walled-up arched window on the left on the ground floor and three simple, rectangular openings next to it. There are four rectangular single windows on the upper floor.
