Kiritapu "Kiri" Allan (born in Te Karaka , Gisborne District ) is a New Zealand lawyer and politician. She is a member of the New Zealand Parliament for the New Zealand Labor Party .

Life and work

Allan's paternal descendants were immigrants from Scotland, her mother was the daughter of a fisherman and WWII veteran and a Maori Pirirakau princess. She was one of ten children and was given the first name of her Maori grandmother.

As a baby, Allan was given to raise up by an aunt and uncle, Gail and David Allan, whose child had died. With them she grew up in Paengaroa, a village of 500 people in the Bay of Plenty administrative region .

At the age of 16 she left school and worked for several years in different locations at KFC , as a vacuum cleaner saleswoman or as a harvest helper. During this time she became a union member. While working in a bar in Auckland , she met a law professor with whom she discussed politics, legal issues and social inequality. He suggested her law school, and she studied law and political science at Victoria University of Wellington in the capital of New Zealand. In breaks between lectures, she followed the debates in the nearby parliament. An editor ( Lecturer ) advised her to join a party if she wanted to understand how policy was working. She joined the Labor Party and did an internship in the office of Prime Minister Helen Clark . After graduation, she returned to her homeland and worked as a business lawyer in law firms and as a business consultant.

In the 2017 general election , at the age of 33 in the East Coast constituency, she unsuccessfully challenged longtime Conservative MP Anne Tolley , but was eventually elected to 21st on the Labor list in the House of Representatives .

She has been married since 2016. On August 29, 2017, her wife Natalie Coates gave birth to daughter Hiwa-i-te-rangi Allan-Coates.

She took her wife and daughter with her to her maiden speech in the House of Representatives in November 2017. She remembered her grandmother, who had only spoken Te Reo Maori until school started. She was forbidden to do so at school, and instead of calling her Kiritapu, she was called "Kitty" from day one and for the rest of her life. Allan emphasized that she wanted to give the silent New Zealanders, like their grandmother, a voice.

Since 2018, Allan has been publishing a weekly podcast together with the Greens MP Chlöe Swarbrick , with which they convey political content in an entertaining way and want to encourage viewers to stand up for their own political issues.
