In 1654 the fountain was redesigned by Gian Lorenzo Bernini on behalf of Olimpia Maidalchini , with the addition of the central statue "il Moro", an Ethiopian fighting a dolphin. The original statues are in the Villa Borghese park in Rome.

On September 3, 2011, one of the statues was damaged by an act of vandalism, but it was repaired by December 16, 2011.
