Food First , also known as the Institute for Food and Development Policy , is a non-governmental organization based in Oakland, California . She received the Right Livelihood Award in 1987 .

The organization was founded in 1975 by Frances Moore Lappé founded and Joseph Collins and describes himself as a "people's think tank and education-for-action center" ( think tank of the people and action-oriented education center).

The organization supports a bottom-up ( bottom-up) approach to solving the problem of hunger in the world. The organization believes that any country can feed itself if it focuses its agriculture on self-sufficiency rather than export. The basic idea of Food First corresponds to the concept of food sovereignty .

The organization strongly opposes institutions such as the World Trade Organization , the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund , which promote or demand the world market orientation of national economies. In 2004 the campaign against the proposed American Free Trade Area was a focus of his actions.

The organization also opposes the rules of US trade with Nigeria . She claims that trade is currently severely affecting the Nigerian economy and that trade rules "legalize the exploitation of Nigeria's natural resources".
