Football Cairn

Football Cairn

The Football Cairn is located on a hill 600 m east of the hamlet of Glitteringstone, near the Hillforts Westhills Camp, between Rothbury and Thropton in Northumberland in England .

The cairn with a massive stone box in the middle is badly disturbed. The name Football Cairn recalls the traditional football game that was played in the Middle Ages between teams from Rothbury and Thropton. Back then, the soccer field stretched from place to place.

A rock near the stone box has cup-and-ring markings on it .
