Rothbury is a city in Northumberland in the north of England . It is located about 21 kilometers northwest of Morpeth and about 42 kilometers north-northwest of Newcastle upon Tyne on the Coquet .

history

Rothbury was first mentioned around 1100 as Routhebiria . Due to its favorable location at a ford of the River Coquet and the toll roads leading through the town to Newcastle upon Tyne, Alnwick , Hexham and Morpeth, Rothbury became a center of trade early on and was granted market rights in 1291 .

Rothbury was part of the Coquet Stop Line , a pillbox bunker defense system from the Second World War .

Others

In and around Rothbury there are several Bastle houses , fortified farms to protect against Border Reivers .

The dog breed the Bedlington Terrier was formerly known as Rothbury Terrier known.

Personalities

The British industrialist William Armstrong , founder of the Armstrong-Whitworth Group, died on December 27, 1900 on his property at Cragside House near Rothbury.
