Scheme of the serosa conditions in humans, the omentale foramen (epiploic foramen) is indicated by an arrow

The omentale foramen (syn. Foramen epiploicum , foramen epiploicum Winslowii ) describes the entrance to the mesh sac cavity ( bursa omentalis ) about 2-3 cm in size . It represents a sliding gap dorsal to the stomach - there is no other natural connection between this sliding gap and the large abdominal cavity .

It is bounded to the front by the ligamentum hepatoduodenale of the lesser omentum , to the rear by the inferior vena cava , to the top by the caudate lobe of the liver and to the bottom by the pars superior of the duodenum . If you enter the above-mentioned sliding gap via this opening from the abdominal cavity, you are in the mesh sac vestibule ( vestibulum bursae omentalis ), which is called that up to the stomach-pancreatic fold ( plica gastropancreatica ) and then as the bursa omentalis to the side towards the spleen continues.
