Forpost Island ( English , Russian Остров Форпост Ostrow Forpost , German ' outpost island' ) is a small island off the Ingrid Christensen coast of the East Antarctic Princess Elisabeth Land . It is located on the southwestern branch of the Rauer Islands .
Norwegian cartographers mapped them in 1946 using aerial photographs of the Lars Christensen Expedition in 1936/37 . Further aerial photographs were taken during the US operation Highjump (1946–1947), during a Soviet Antarctic expedition in 1956 and during the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions in 1956 and 1957. Soviet scientists named them. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia translated this designation into English.
