Soviet Antarctic Expedition
The following research trips to Antarctica carried out by the Soviet Union between 1955 and 1993 are officially designated as the Soviet Antarctic Expedition (SovAE) :
- 1. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1955–1957) under the direction of Michail Somow with the icebreakers Ob and Lena and the refrigerated ship No. 7 . Construction of the Mirny-Station ( Queen Marie-Land ), the Pionerskaja-Station and the Oasis-Station (both Wilkesland ). Exploring possible locations for the Vostok station (Wilkesland) and the Sovetskaya station ( Kaiser-Wilhelm-II.-Land ).
- 2. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1956–1958) under the direction of Alexei Trjoschnikow with the icebreakers Ob and Lena and the transport ship Kooperazija . Replacement of the first expedition, construction of the first Vostok station and the Komsomolskaya station on the Wilkesland Traverse for glaciological studies within the framework of the IGY , as well as oceanographic studies.
- 3. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1957–1959) under the direction of Yevgeny Tolstikow with the icebreakers Ob and Lena and the transport ship Kooperazija . Replacement of the second expedition, construction of the Sovetskaya station, continuation of work within the framework of the IGY. One of the participants is the Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos .
- 4. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1958–1960) under the direction of Alexander Dralkin (1911–2007) with the icebreaker Ob and the cruise ship Mikhail Kalinin . For the first time, planning and implementation are in the hands of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute . Construction of Lazarev Station ( Queen Maud Land ). One of the participants is again the Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos.
- 5. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1959–1961) under the direction of Yevgeny Korotkewitsch (1918–1994) with the icebreaker Ob and the transport ship Kooperazija . Construction of the temporary Druzhba Station ( Zavodovski Island ), Mir Station ( Drygalski Island ) and Popeda Station ( Queen Marie Land ). Landing on Peter I Island on March 9, 1960. The Czech meteorologist Oldřich Kostka (1924–1960) died on August 3, 1960 in a fire at Mirny Station, along with seven other scientists.
- 6. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1960–1962) under the direction of Valentin Driatski with the icebreaker Ob . Decommissioning of Lazarev station and construction of Novolasarevskaya station (both Queen Maud Land).
- 7. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1961–1963) under the direction of Alexander Dralkin (1911–2007) with the icebreaker Ob and the transport ship Kooperazija . Operation of the Komsomolskaya station in the Antarctic summer and the Molodjoschnaja station ( Enderbyland ) for three months. Temporary shutdown of the Vostok station. Two planes return from Moscow to Mirny and Vostok stations. The astronomer Antonín Mrkos takes part as part of a four-person Czech visiting team.
- 8. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1962–1964) under the direction of Michail Somow (summer) and Nikolai Tjabin (winter) with the icebreakers Ob and Estonia . Start of permanent operation of the Molodjozhnaya station, resumption of operation of the Vostok station with air support. Exploration and surveying of the area around Peter I Island with the Ob .
- 9. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1963–1965) led by Michail Somow (summer) and Pawel Senko (winter) with the ships Ob and Estonia . Exploration of the Antarctic ice sheet between the Mirny and Vostok stations together with French scientists.
- 10. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1964–1966) led by Michail Ostrekin (summer) and Iwan Petrow (winter) with the ships Ob and Estonia . Beginning of the reconstruction of the Molodyzhnaya Station in order to operate it as the Soviet main base in place of the Mirny Station.
- 11. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1965–1967) led by Dmitri Maksutow (summer) and Leonid Dubrowin (winter) with the ships Ob and Friedrich Engels .
- 12. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1966–1968) under the direction of Pawel Senko (summer) and Wladislaw Gerbowitsch (winter) with the icebreaker Ob . The Czech geologist Josef Sekyra (1928–2008) took part as a visiting scientist .
- 13th Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1967–1969) led by Alexei Trjoschnikow (summer) and Wladimir Schamontjew (winter) with the ships Ob , Professor Witse , Boris Davidow , Faddei Bellingshausen and Akademik Knipowitsch .
- 14. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1968–1970) under the direction of Dmitri Maksutow with 368 participants, 148 of which are only active in the Antarctic summer months. Ships in use are Ob , Professor Subow , Peter Schirschow and Elbrus . Relief of the teams at Mirny Station and Bellingshausen Station ( King George Island ).
- 15. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1969–1971) under the leadership of Pawel Senko (summer) and Wladislaw Gerbowitsch (winter) with the ships Ob and Professor Witse . Operation of Leningradskaya Station ( Viktorialand ) as an Antarctic summer station.
- 16. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1970–1972) headed by Ivan Petrow with the ships Ob , Professor Witse , Professor Subow , Bobruyskles , Elbrus and Akademik Knipowitsch . Operation of Leningradskaya Station as an Antarctic winter station. The headquarters of Russian Antarctic Research is moving from the Mirny to the Molodjoschnaja station.
- 17th Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1971–1973) under the direction of Yevgeny Korotkewitsch (summer) and Vyacheslav Averyanov (winter) with the ships Ob , Navarin , Professor Wise , Nadeschda Krupskaja and Akademik Knipowitsch . Largest Antarctic expedition ever carried out by the Soviet Union. Start of operation of the Sodruschestvo station ( Princess Elisabeth Land ) as an Antarctic summer station.
- 18. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1972–1974) under the direction of Pawel Senko with the ships Ob , Professor Subow , Navarin and Stanislaw . Construction of the Russkaya station ( Marie-Byrd-Land ).
- 19. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1973–1975) under the direction of Dmitri Maksutow (summer) and Wenjamin Ignatow (winter) with the ships Professor Wise , Olenek , Vasily Fedossejew , Nina Sagajdak and Bashkirija .
- 20th Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1974–1976) led by Valeri Serdyukov (summer) and Nikolai Kornilow (winter) with the ships Ob , Olenek , Professor Subow , Professor Wise , Wankarem and Glendschik .
- 21. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1975–1977) under the direction of Oleg Sedov (summer) and Gennady Bardin (winter) with the ships Wassili Fedosejew , Michail Somow , Professor Wise and Michail Kalinin . Summer operation of the Druzhnaya station (Princess Elisabeth Land).
- 22nd Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1976–1978) led by Nikolai Tjabin (summer) and Leonid Dubrowin (winter) with the ships Michail Somow , Kapitan Gotski , Penschina , Bashkirija , Professor Subow , Estonia and Glendschik .
- 23rd Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1977–1979) led by Valery Serdyukov (summer) and Oleg Sedov (winter) with the ships Michail Somow , Estonia , Professor Subow , Kapitan Kondratjew , Amgujema and Bashkirija .
- 24. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1978–1980) under the direction of Yevgeny Korotkewitsch (Sommer, replaced by Oleg Sedov after his death on May 3, 1979 following a helicopter accident ) and Alexander Artemjew (Winter) with the ships Michail Somow , Professor Wise , Professor Subov , BAM , Bryanskles , Kapitan Markow , Estonia and Bashkiria .
- 25th Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1980–1981) led by Nikolai Kornilow (summer) and Nikolai Tjabin (winter) with the ships Michail Somow , Professor Wise , Bashkirija , Pioner Estonia , Gischiga , Estonia and Professor Subow .
- 26th Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1980–1982) led by Valery Serdyukov (summer) and Vladimir Shamontiev (winter) with the ships Michail Somow , Professor Wise , Professor Subow , BAM , Estonia , Pioner Onegi , Kapitan Markow and Bashkirija .
- 27. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1981–1983) under the direction of Dmitri Maksutow (summer) and Rjurik Galkin (winter) with the ships Michail Somow , Professor Subow , Bashkirija , Pioner Estonii , Vasili Fedosejew , Estonia and Urengoy .
- 28th Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1982-1984) under the direction of Nikolai Kornilow (summer) and Alexander Artemjew (winter) with the ships Professor Subow , Kapitan Mishevsky , Kapitan Markow , Bashkirija , Professor Wise , Pawel Korchagin , BAM , Admiral Vladimirsky , Faddei Bellingshausen and Michail Somow .
- 29. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1983–1985) led by Nikolai Tjabin (summer) and Lev Bulatow (winter) with the ships Baikal , Kapitan Gotski , Michail Somow , Professor Wise , Pioner Estonii and Adademik Krilow .
- 30. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1984–1986) led by Ryurik Galkin (summer) and Dmitri Maksutow (winter) with the ships Pawel Korchagin , Kapitan Mishevsky , Michail Somow , Baikal , Akademik Krilow and BAM .
- 31. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1985–1987) led by Nikolai Tjabin (summer) and Valeri Dubovtsew (winter) with the ships Pioner Estonii , Kapitan Bondarenko , Kapitan Gotski , Mikhail Somow , Baikal , Professor Wise and Professor Subow .
- 32nd Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1986–1988) under the direction of Valeri Klokow (Summer) and Valeri Wowk with the ships Kapitan Kondratjew , Vasily Fedossejew , Michail Somow , Baikal , Professor Zubov , Pawel Korchagin , BAM and geologist Dmitri Naliwkin .
- 33. Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1987–1989) under the direction of Nikolai Kornilow (summer) and Yuri A. Khabarov (winter) with the ships ' Akademik Fedorov' , Michail Somow , Professor Wise , Professor Subow , Vitus Bering and Kapitan Mishevsky . Establishment of the Progress Station (Princess Elisabeth Land).
- 34th Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1988–1990) under the leadership of Sergei Prjamikow (summer) and Lev Bulatow (winter) with the ships Akademik Fedorov , Michail Somow , Professor Wise , Vitus Bering , Berezovo , geologist Dmitri Naliwkin and Professor Subow . Partial dismantling of the Progress station.
- 35th Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1989–1991) under the direction of W. M. Pigusow with the ships Akademik Fedorov , Michail Somow , Professor Subow , Vladimir Arsenyev and geologist Dmitri Naliwkin . One death each on the Professor Zubov and one on the Mirny station.
- 36th Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1990–1992) led by Lev Sawatjugin with the ships Akademik Fedorov , Michail Somow , Professor Subow , Professor Wise , Navarin and Beresowo . Closure of the Russkaya and Leningradskaya stations. A death on the Progress ward.
- 37th Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1991–1993) under the direction of Nikolai Kornilow with the ships Akademik Fedorov , Michail Somow , Professor Subow , Professor Wise , and Professor Multanowski . Beginning before the dissolution of the Soviet Union on December 21, 1991.
