As research submarines specific to submarines referred to the systematic study of the seabed or certain ocean currents are used or used with archaeological, biological or geological order. Research submarines also act as so-called search submarines (often unmanned diving robots ) that are supposed to track down and examine objects on the ocean floor, such as the wreck of the Titanic or Bismarck .

Research submarines are distinguished from military submarines by a number of design and technical differences . As a rule, they are built smaller, which means that they can be easily maneuvered, and they are powered exclusively by an electric drive with batteries . They are slower, but allow the crew to dive to much greater depths, such as the deep-sea submarines of the Deepflight series, Trieste , Alvin , Deep Rover , Mir 1 and 2 and Deepsea Challenger . In addition, the operating time and thus the diving time of research submarines is significantly limited due to the dependency on the batteries and oxygen reserves. An exception to this was the nuclear-powered NR-1 of the United States Navy until it was decommissioned in 2008 .

Jago is the only German research submarine.
