The Research Alliance for Cultural Heritage (full name: Research Alliance for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage ) is an amalgamation of five major German research institutions . a. are active in the field of cultural property protection as well as in industrial technologies and are actively committed to the preservation of cultural heritage . It is financed through acquired research projects.

In October 2008, the Research Alliance for Cultural Heritage was founded in the Altes Museum in Berlin as an open cooperation by Ulrich Buller, the research director of the Fraunhofer Society , the President of the Leibniz Association , Ernst Theodor Rietschel, and the President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation , Hermann Parzinger.

In July 2014, the research alliance for cultural heritage expanded with the two partners: State Art Collections Dresden and Saxon State Library - State and University Library Dresden .

tasks and goals

The Research Alliance for Cultural Heritage has set itself the goal of contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage through the development of new processes, materials and technologies for the restoration and conservation of cultural assets. This research work is accompanied by socio-economic studies on the qualitative and quantitative value of cultural heritage as well as by a knowledge cluster "Cultural Heritage" which deals with the topic of sustainable cultural tourism. Due to the multidisciplinary composition of the members and their experience in the field of cultural property preservation, novel approaches are possible that meet the complex requirements of the preservation of cultural property. In addition to these aspects of professional (further) development, the Cultural Heritage Research Alliance strives to stimulate the exchange between science, research, society, politics and business, to offer training and further education opportunities, to promote young scientists and to promote national and international networks in the field to expand the protection of cultural property.

Research areas and projects

The research and projects are diverse and cover a large part of the extensive field of cultural heritage research. Examples include: the detection of structural damage in works of art made of stone by means of ultrasound or the development of coating materials that protect industrial monuments from corrosion in an environmentally friendly manner and the recording of the effects of climate change on the preservation of cultural heritage.

The first joint research project is the project “Plasma technology - an innovative technology for the conservation and restoration of cultural assets” (duration 2009–2012). The aim is to investigate the potential of plasma technologies and accelerated electrons in order to make them useful for the preservation of cultural heritage.

The “Green Museum” series of events has been held annually since 2010 and deals with topics relating to air conditioning concepts and energy efficiency, depot planning, exhibition practice and loan transactions .

In June 2013, the Cultural Heritage Research Alliance celebrated its fifth anniversary. A symposium in Berlin took stock of the past five years and presented current research projects. At the same time one of its founding presidents, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Buller (former board member of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft) said goodbye.

The specialist conference on "Pollutants in museums" in Dresden in July 2014 also represented the official admission ceremony for two new members: The State Art Collections Dresden (SKD) and the Saxon State Library - State and University Library Dresden (SLUB) became associated partners of the research alliance Heritage Site. On this occasion, the board of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft launched the research project "Protecting our cultural heritage with Fraunhofer innovations - a model project with the State Art Collections Dresden and the Saxon State Library - State and University Library Dresden" (duration 2015-2018). This joint project deals with current conservation and restoration issues relating to the preservation of cultural assets from museums and libraries.
