The Research Institute for Mineralogical and Metallic Materials Edelmetalle / Edelsteine GmbH (FEE) is a research institute and production company based in Idar-Oberstein in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Company profile

The FEE is an institution that artificially produces laser crystals. It grows and processes crystals that are used in medicine, industry and technology. Every year around 1,000 crystals are grown in the FEE laboratories, which are used in welding and cutting lasers in the automotive industry. Many crystals are also used in medical devices. This makes the FEE a unique institution in Europe.

In addition to the production of crystals, the FEE researches new methods for the production of crystals and for increasing the crystal quality. Its facilities include a scanning electron microscope which, for example, enables materials to be tested right down to the crystal structure. The FEE works closely with the Institute for Geosciences at the University of Mainz .

75 percent of the institute is owned by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate , ten percent of the shares are held by the city ​​of Idar-Oberstein and the district of Birkenfeld ; the remaining five percent belong to the Federal Association of the Gemstone and Jewelry Industry.

history

The institute was founded in 1990 as a GmbH . Lothar Ackermann was managing director from the start until July 2017. After his retirement, Andreas Pahl took over the function.

In November 2017 it was announced that the state of Rhineland-Palatinate will part with its shares and that these will be sold in a public tender.

In 2018 it was announced that the shareholders had sold their stake in the US company Electro-Optics Technology (EOT).
