Forest tower

The forest tower is a war memorial in the Jena Forest and was erected in 1874 in honor of the fallen soldiers of the Jena battalion (3rd battalion of the 5th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 94 ) in the Franco-German War . The 25 m high tower made of irregular limestone masonry consists of an octagonal substructure with protruding support pillars and a walkway, on top of which there is a small round tower with a crenellated crown . The names of the fallen are on eight metal plates .

history

The foundation stone was laid on June 18, 1871 as the highlight of the peace festival on the occasion of the end of the Franco-German War. Exactly three years later the tower was inaugurated. The forest tower has been under municipal administration since 1885. In 1958 the tower was closed to the public and used as a transmission tower . In 2009 a renovation was carried out to make the monument accessible again.
