Fort Bayona

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fort Bayona was a fortress on St. Mary's Island at Dockyard Point (former name: Banyon Point ) in the Gambia River in the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean in the area of what is now the West African state of Gambia .

Settlers from the Duchy of Courland and Zemgale built Fort Bayona at the mouth of the river in 1651 and another on St. Andrews Island (later James Island, now Kunta Kinteh Island ). A third fortress was across from St. Andrews Island on the mainland. The Kurlanders gave up Fort Bayona after a few years.
