Fort Campbell (Gambia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fort Campbell was a fortress on the inland island of Janjanbureh Island in the Gambia River in what is now the West African state of Gambia .

In 1827 the fort was built on the western end of the island near Fatota as a successor to Fort George . Sir Neil Campbell , Governor General of Sierra Leone , commissioned the construction of the fort that was named after him. As with Fort George, clay was probably used as the building material . In the following year it was decided to rebuild Fort George in the middle of the north shore of the island.

Fort Campbell was used until 1850; it is not known whether there are any remains.
