Fort d'Ivry

The Fort d'Ivry is one of the fortresses around the French capital Paris has been built around it. It is located in Ivry-sur-Seine , about seven kilometers southeast of Paris, in the French department of Val-de-Marne .

The Fort d'Ivry secures one of the entrances to Paris. It has a pentagonal floor plan. The fortress is supplied by three water sources and has a parade ground which is flanked by barracks. There are also two barracks for the officers.

The fortress has more than two kilometers of catacombs that were built between 1852 and 1860.

history

The fortress was built between 1841 and 1845. It is one of a series of fortresses designed to protect the capital Paris from conquest. During the Franco-Prussian War , the fortress was the starting point for attacks against the VI. Prussian Corps. After the French defeat, the VI. Corps stationed there.

In the 20th century, the fort came into public awareness when it served as a place of execution for terrorists of the OAS : Roger Degueldre was executed on July 6, 1962 by firing squad.

Jean Bastien-Thiry , organizer of the Petit-Clamart assassination attempt on President Charles de Gaulle on August 22, 1962, was shot dead in Fort d'Ivry on March 11, 1963. It was the last execution by firing squad in France.

ECPAD

The Établissement de communication et de production audiovisuelle de la Défense , ECPAD, a company of the French Ministry of Defense, has its headquarters in the fort. There is also a large archive of military historical documents in the fort.
