Forter Castle is an L-shaped tower house in Glenisla in the Scottish Council Area Angus . James Ogilvy, 5th Lord of Airlie , had it built in 1560. Archibald Campbell, 8th Earl of Argyll , burned it down in 1640 . It was rebuilt in the early 1990s.

history

James Ogilvy had Forter Castle built to protect the way over the Balloch Pass into Glen Shee from intruders.

James Ogilvy's grandson James Ogilvy, 7th Lord of Airlie was in 1639 by King Charles II. Of England to the Earl of Airlie levied. In 1650 James Ogilvy refused to sign the National Covenant , so the Duke of Argyll Forter Castle burned down along with Airlie Castle . The Ogilvys moved to Cortachy Castleum . In 1988 Forter Castle was rebuilt by Robert Pooley .

architecture

The castle consists of a main block and a wing attached at right angles in the southeast, so that an L-shaped floor plan results. On the ground floor there are two storage cellars and the kitchen; all three rooms have vaulted ceilings . The partition walls between the rooms were missing until the renovation. The knight's hall was on the first floor and had an open fireplace. Above that there are two more full floors and an attic.

The castle, rebuilt in 1988, has five floors. The knight's hall is still on the 1st floor, the parade bedroom on the 2nd floor. There are three further bedrooms on the 3rd floor.

Historic Scotland has listed Forter Castle as a Category B Historic Building.
