The Roman Forum in Bavay , now a French commune in the Nord department in the Hauts-de-France region , was created during the Roman Empire . In 1992 the area of the former Roman city was placed under protection as a monument historique .

In the Roman Empire, Bavay was the capital of the Celtic Nervier tribe under the name Bagacum Nerviorum and an important road junction. Among other things, the Via Belgica ran through Bagacum.

The forum was discovered by Henri Bievelet in 1940 after Bavay was partially destroyed by German bombing raids at the beginning of the Second World War, leaving the underground exposed. Remains of a basilica , the delimited square with a cryptoporticus and a temple were found.

The basilica was 98 meters long. The forum, built on three sides, was around 100 meters wide and 240 meters long. At the end of the 3rd century, the area of the forum was equipped with fortifications as protection. In the year 430 there is the last record of the existence of the forum or the fortified place on the road connection to Cologne .

In 1976 the newly built Roman Museum was opened, which shows many excavation finds and depicts the ancient history of the place.
