Forum Scientiarum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Forum Scientiarum (official spelling: FORUM SCIENTIARUM, Latin for Science Place ) is a central educational institution of the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen .

The forum serves to promote the interdisciplinary dialogue in research and teaching. It should be a place "where the sciences work together on technical problems, reflect on their relationship to one another and reflect on their own fundamentals in dialogue," says the institution in its self-portrayal.

The forum was founded with the support of the Udo Keller Foundation Forum Humanum , the Klett family and the Evangelical Church in Württemberg as part of the Tübingen Excellence Initiative and is located in the study house of the Udo Keller Foundation at Doblerstrasse 33 in Tübingen.

Courses

The Forum Scientiarum has been running a two-semester preparatory college every year since 2006. 25 students, selected according to strict academic criteria, go through a seminar and lecture program and work in small teams on their own research projects. In addition, the forum organizes several international academies and summer schools each year and supports various university working groups of students and scientists.

public events

The "CIN Dialogues at the Interface of the Neurosciences and the Arts and Humanities" are intended to promote the exchange between the neurosciences, the humanities and the social sciences as well as the exchange between the academic and the non-academic world. The systematic crossing of subject boundaries should open up new, unexpected perspectives. The CIN Dialogues are jointly organized by the Werner Reichardt Center for Integrative Neurosciences (CIN) and the Forum Scientiarum.

The Unseld Lectures, an annual series of lectures, are also intended to promote dialogue between the sciences, especially between the natural sciences and the humanities. They are “a place where the dialogue with top scientists is conducted publicly and at the highest level”. To do this, they combine the three formats of the lecture, disputation and master class. They are financed and organized by the Forum Scientiarum, the "edition unseld" of the Suhrkamp Verlag Frankfurt, the Udo Keller Foundation Forum Humanum and the University of Tübingen .

Previous speakers and teachers of the Unseld Lectures have been the Nobel Prize Winner for Physics Robert B. Laughlin (2008), the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk (2009), the philosopher Martha C. Nussbaum (2010), the neurobiologist Humberto Maturana (2011), the biologist Frans de Waal (2012), the social scientist Charles Taylor (2013), the neuroscientist António Damásio (2014) and the anthropologist Michael Tomasello (2015). In 2016, the British political scientist and sociologist Colin Crouch will be a guest at the Unseld Lectures.
