Fot (rune master)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fot carved the runestone from Skokloster

Fot worked as a rune master in central Sweden in the middle of the 11th century . He cut many rune stones in Uppland , but only a few of them are signed. He was an experienced and sure rune master to whom about 50 rune stones are attributed through ornamentation, spelling and style. The Danish rune lines, the horizontal rune bands and his standard cross are characteristic of Fot's work. One of the most famous stones is the rune stone from Skokloster (U 678).

Signed rune stones are mainly found in the southeast of Uppland. Judging by the style, he was influenced by Åsmund Kåresson .

The rune master Torgöt states on the stone U 308 cut in the rune stone style Pr 4 - middle phase of the Urnes style - that he was the heir to Fot. He was probably Fot's student or his son.

Fot signed the rune stone U 945 in front of the Danmark church near Uppsala , as did the stone U 268, on which only “Fot carved” is preserved.
