Fotolia was an international American stock photo agency and an online marketplace for royalty-free photos, graphics, and videos. According to its own information, Fotolia had a database of over 40 million royalty-free images, graphics and videos (as of June 11, 2015). The company's headquarters were in New York, while the European headquarters were in Paris.

On January 28, 2015, the US company Adobe announced that it had completely taken over Fotolia and that it would integrate Adobe Creative Cloud into its online offering.

Fotolia was discontinued on November 5, 2019.

history

The microstock agency was founded at the end of 2004 by Thibaud Elzière, Oleg Tscheltzoff and Patrick Chassany.

The US holding company Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) has held around 50 percent of the shares in Fotolia since May 2012.

Services

The photos are sold exclusively on the Internet. The images can be obtained either in files or by subscription. In addition to the English language version, Fotolia is available in 23 other languages. License fees are charged for downloading and using the works. These are shown on the website in credits and paid for.

In order to be able to sell pictures, a registration with name, address and a valid e-mail address as well as the deposit of an official identification paper in JPEG or PDF format is necessary.

Providers can choose the status "Fully Exclusive Provider". This enables higher commissions for every picture sale and that the sales prices for the pictures are determined by Fotolia itself according to the pricing conditions. In return, no images may be offered for free or for sale on other license-free microstock photo websites or on their own website.

Fotolia service

The German subsidiary Fotolia Service, founded in May 2011 and based in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, is under the management of Martin Ruge-Freiherr Löw von und zu Steinfurth.
