history

Painting wallpaper from 1788

Wallpapers with images have existed since the 17th century. The classic photo wallpaper had its boom in the 1970s. It served as a striking design element in many German households, with beach motifs being popular. The party room and sometimes the living room were places for eye-catching photo wallpapers. After the trend subsided in the mid-1980s, retro fashion has been evident since 2005 .

Individual photo wallpapers

Today you can design individual photo wallpapers from various providers on the Internet. A wallpaper can be printed with your own photo and in a desired size to fit your own wall. Countless motifs are available on photo wallpapers in specialist shops and on the online market. Overprints with modern illustrations or black and white photographs are popular. The individual prints are made using large-format digital printing with UV, latex, pigment or solvent inks.

Materials of the photo wallpaper

As for the usual wallpaper, there are also different materials for the photo wallpaper. The most common photo wallpapers are made of paper or non-woven materials.

  • Photo paper wallpapers are made of a thinner paper material (115–130 g / m²), comparable to normal paper and mostly in sets, i. H. available in individual squares or in standard strips of wallpaper.
  • Non-woven photo wallpapers are made of a tear-resistant material and are of higher quality. They usually have a structure and are produced and applied in strips.
  • Self-adhesive vinyl photo wallpapers consist of a soft PVC film with a self-adhesive coating (usually with a permanent polyacrylate adhesive layer).
  • Manufacturers of common photo wallpapers are interested in the fire protection of their products and have them certified as flame retardant according to DIN 4102 B1 (B1 certificate).

Factors such as the weight , type of attachment, structure and printability of the material determine the use of the suitable photo wallpaper. A paper wallpaper is - due to the material - usually cheaper; the photo non-woven wallpaper is easier to work with and of higher quality. Due to their tear-resistant material properties, non-woven photo wallpapers offer a greater advantage of later removability, as the non-woven wallpaper can usually be removed in very large pieces or even in wallpaper strips.
