Four or Five Times

Four or Five Times is a pop song written by Byron Gay (music) and Marco H. Hellman (lyrics) and published in 1927.

Gay compositions like “Oh!” (1920), “Horses” (1926) and above all “Four or Five Times” were popular numbers with hot jazz musicians from the 1920s ; The gay Hellman song Four or Five Times was covered from the late 1920s a. a. by Jack Walsh And His Orchestra (Cameo), Jimmie Noone (Vocalion), McKinney's Cotton Pickers (Victor), the Chocolate Dandies around Don Redman (OKeh), Irving Mills (Banner); King Oliver was in the charts for two weeks with his version of the song (Brunswick) in 1928 and reached # 17.

In the 1930s and early 40s, "Four or Five Times" recorded the swing bands of Isham Jones , Jimmy Lunceford , Tommy Dorsey , Lionel Hampton , Count Basie , Benny Goodman , Sam Donahue , Lucky Millinder and Woody Herman and His Orchestra , also Sidney Bechet , Art Hodes and Joe Marsala . In the post-war years, the pop song was also interpreted by Rex Stewart , Earl Hines , Bob Wills , George Lewis , Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald . The discographer Tom Lord lists 170 cover versions (as of 2016) in the jazz category .
