The Fourth Allied Tactical Air Force (short: 4 ATAF ; German 4th Allied Tactical Air Force ) was a major formation of NATO at the time of the Cold War , whose task was to air support for the CENTAG ( Central Army Group to provide). It was founded in 1951 and its headquarters were initially at Trier Air Base before it was stationed at Ramstein Air Base from 1957 . In 1980 the headquarters of the 4 ATAF and that of the CENTAG were moved to the Campbell Barracks in Heidelberg . In 1993 CENTAG and 4 ATAF stopped their work and were replaced by the headquarters of LANDCENT ( Allied Land Forces Central Europe ). The tasks of the 4 ATAF were taken over by the Allied Air Forces Central Europe .
