Foys Lake is an artificial lake in the city of Chittagong in Bangladesh .

location

Foys Lake is located in Thana Khulshi about three kilometers northeast of the city center at an altitude of 35 meters in the middle of a forested range of hills, the hills of which reach a height of about 80 meters. The area around the range of hills is densely populated, with a population density of around 10,000 people per square kilometer.

history

The lake was created in 1924 by the Assam Bengal Railway Authority by damming a stream that flowed down from the hills to the north of Chittagong. Its purpose was to supply the residents of the nearby Pahartali railway settlement, where a large number of railway workers lived, with water.

The lake was originally called Pahartali Lake and later renamed after the railway engineer Foy, under whose supervision it was built.

description

The lake is branched out and stretches in narrow arms over several merging valleys of the hill chain. The lake is owned by Bangladesh Railway , the state-owned railway company of Bangladesh. The outflow of the lake is channeled into a small river that flows into the Bay of Bengal .

At the southern end of the lake is an amusement park operated by the Concord Group from Bangladesh, which also includes the lake, a resort and a water park located on another part of the lake. The Chittagong Zoo, which opened in 1989, is also located at the southern end of the lake; its entrance is directly opposite that of the amusement park.
