Asiatic Society of Bangladesh
The Asiatic Society of Bangladesh ( Bengali : বাংলাদেশ এশিয়াটিক সোসাইটি ) is a non-governmental , non-profit society based in Dhaka . It was founded in 1952 as the Asiatic Society of Pakistan and has had its current name since 1972. The purpose of the company is to promote studies of people and nature in Asia .
The company is publisher of Banglapedia , the National Encyclopedia of Bangladesh, whose expenditure in Bengali and English are in print, on CD-ROM and available online. It was created by more than 1200 authors and contains around 6600 articles.
The following should be mentioned above all in other company projects:
- the "Encyclopedia of Flora and Fauna of Bangladesh", a comprehensive compendium of the biodiversity of Bangladesh in 28 volumes
- the "Cultural Survey of Bangladesh", a documentation of the cultural history and tradition of Bangladesh in 12 volumes
- the "Children's Banglapedia", a child-friendly edition of Banglapedia in three volumes
The roots of the association go back to the Asiatic Society of Bengal founded by Sir William Jones in 1784 . The founding of today's society was driven by the archaeologist , historian and linguist Ahmad Hasan Dani , with the participation of other well-known scientists such as B. Muhammad Shahidullah , Abu Mohamed Habibullah and Abdul Halim . The patron of the society is the President of the Republic .
