history

The farm was built in 1842 by Christian Schmutz and his stepmother Magdalena Schmutz. Your initials and the year are above the front door of the former house. The former barn was built a little later; it is marked between its two arches with the year of construction 1849. The design of the courtyard as a multi-building courtyard, in which the residential house and farm building are spatially separated, is a special feature in the area around Bad Rappenau, since at that time the building type of the standard courtyard with stable and living rooms under one roof predominates.

The builder Christian Schmutz came from a Mennonite family , was a long-time tenant of the estate belonging to the Barons of Gemmingen in Rappenau and also an elder and preacher of the Rappenau Mennonite community. He remained unmarried, so that after his death in 1872 the property came to his half-siblings David and Katharina Schmutz. In 1886 the merchant's widow Lena Herbst bought the property and sold it to the farmer Martin Söhner in 1889. After almost 100 years in the possession of the Söhner family, the Bad Rappenau community acquired the now badly dilapidated property in 1986 and, after three years of renovation, opened a local museum and rooms for various cultural institutions in it in 1989. A connecting wing was built between the former house and the former barn.

Todays use

The basement of the property and the ground floor of the new building house the Bad Rappenau local history museum, which focuses on archaeological finds and the history of the Rappenau salt works and the associated spa business. The new building also serves as a usable area for special exhibitions and events. The city library extends over the three upper floors of the former barn building, while the youth music school uses the ground floor of the building. The adult education center uses six rooms in the former residential building.
