Frédéric A. Baron d'Erlanger

Frédéric Alfred d'Erlanger (originally Friedrich Alfred Freiherr von Erlanger * 29. May 1868 in Paris ; † 23. April 1943 in London ) was a born in France, later living in England Anglo-French banker and composer with assumed British Citizenship of German-American descent. He came from the German-French-British banking family d'Erlanger .

His grandfather Raphael von Erlanger founded the quickly successful banking house Erlanger & Söhne in the free city of Frankfurt am Main in 1848 , later with the help of his four sons.

His father Frédéric Emile Baron von Erlanger (1832–1911) expanded the Paris branch so successfully that it became an independent, world-class bank. Among other things, he became an important financier of railway construction. He married the American Marguerite Mathilde Slidell (1842–1927).

Life

Frédéric A. Baron d'Erlanger began his musical studies in Paris under Anselm Ehmant, his only teacher born in Frankfurt am Main (1832–1895) in his French hometown.

He published his first work, a collection of songs, at an early age. His compositions were especially operas.

But he mainly worked as a banker, especially after moving to London and taking on British citizenship. There he lived the life of a bourgeois until his death at Rutland Gate No. 24. Among other things, he financed the construction of the railway between South Africa and Zambia together with the English businessman Cecil Rhodes .

Despite a longstanding relationship with the Spaniard Madame de Betelu, he never married and left no heirs.
