Early medieval row burial ground (Dittenheim)

The early medieval row cemetery on the district Dittenheim , a municipality in the Middle Franconian district of Weissenburg-Gunzenhausen is as archaeological monument (File no. D-5-6930-0059) under monument protection provided.

Located on the eastern outskirts burial ground from the 6/7. Century was first examined in 1937 and almost completely excavated between 1968 and 1971. It contained 248 burials, including some cremation graves and several horse graves .

The deceased and their traditional costume accessories were usually laid in the northern half of the wooden burial chambers built into the grave shafts. In the southern half lay the food and the weapons that were given to the men. A filigree gold disc brooch was found on a woman in the burial ground .
