The questionnaire for the diagnosis of depression according to DSM-IV ( FDD-DSM-IV or FDD for short ) is a questionnaire for self- assessment of depressive symptoms , which is used to assess whether major depression as defined by DSM-IVpresent. It was developed by C. Kühner in 1997 and comprises 18 questions. There are two forms. While form A contains a time criterion that is used to differentiate between symptoms that last over two weeks, form B does not have a time criterion. There is a non-linear weighting of main and accompanying symptoms. The test is standardized for an age between 18 and 60 years. Occasionally the area of ​​application is indicated from the age of 16 years. The processing time is estimated at 10 to 15 minutes. The evaluation time is estimated at 5 minutes. The questionnaire is recommended in the S3 guideline for bipolar disorder and in the S3 guideline for unipolar depression.

With regard to the criteria of the DSM-III, the " Invertory to Diagnose Depression " (IDD) was developed in 1986 by Mark Zimmerman, William Coryell, Caryn Corenthal and Sheila Wilson . The IDD originally comprised 22 questions. The FDD was developed to adapt to the DSM-IV by translating the IDD questions into German and reducing them to 18 questions.
