Fragment from the tomb of Nicarete

The 117 cm high and 59 cm wide fragment of a grave relief made of Pentelic marble shows a woman named Nikarete, daughter of Ktesikles from the Demos Hagnous . Her name is inscribed on a gable , which has also been preserved and assigned to the grave. The gable elements were worked separately. Nikarete sits in the manner of Euandria in the left direction on the right edge of the relief . She is sitting on an upholstered chair with no backrest. Her head protrudes from the relief and is turned forward. She has pulled a cloak ( himation ) over her head . Underneath she wears a chiton with a flap and buttoned mock sleeves. Nikarete's hair is not parted and is pulled up in a bun over her forehead. There are holes in the earlobes that used to hold real earrings.

Today it is unclear how large the relief was overall and how many other people were depicted on it. It probably belonged to one of the most elaborate tombs of the 4th century BC, some of which are known today. Such tombs were built especially economically successful parts of the Athenian citizenship. The nose, parts of the lips and larger pieces of the coat have recently been added. The additions were made in the workshop of Johann Gottfried Schadow . The fragments were found between Athens and the port of Piraeus . The pieces were acquired in 1820 by Baron Albert von Sack , who had traveled through Greece and the Orient with the Austrian consul at the time in Athens, Georg Christian Gropius , and during this time he bought a collection of ancient artifacts, which he later bought from the Antikensammlung in Berlin bequeathed. It was one of the first ancient works of art that did not come to Berlin via the Italian art trade.
