Albert von Sack

Sebastian Albert Freiherr von Sack , from 1821 Count von Sack (* 1757 in Eichholz, Liegnitz district , Silesia ; today: Warmątowice Siekiewiczkowskie, Poland ; † August 7, 1829 in Berlin ) was a Silesian explorer , royal Prussian chamberlain and knight of the Order of St. John .

Life

Albert Freiherr von Sack was appointed royal Prussian chamberlain and vice chief hunter on June 9, 1821 in Berlin by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. raised to the Prussian count status. In 1822, v. Sack the orphanage in Halle (Saale) , an institution of the Francke Foundations , as the universal heir of his not inconsiderable fortune.

Trip to Suriname

After his first trip to Suriname in April 1805, he then went to North America in 1807 , where he visited the cities of Providence , Boston , New York , Philadelphia , Baltimore , Washington , Alexandria and Mount Vernon , among others . The return journey to Germany took place via New York and Lisbon . In 1810 his travelogues for the years 1805–1807 were published in England.

He finished his second trip to Suriname in England in 1812.

Travel to the Middle East

On August 20, 1817, he went on a research trip to Greece and Asia Minor together with the poet Wilhelm Müller . After their stay in Vienna from September to November 1817 , they changed the route on November 6, 1817 and traveled on with Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld . Schnorr stayed in Florence , Müller and Sack traveled on to Rome . They arrived there on January 4, 1818, but a rift broke out there and in April 1818 Sack traveled on alone.

Today in the Antikensammlung Berlin located fragment from the tomb of Nikarete acquired Albert von Sack 1820. It was one of the first ancient artworks that were not on the Italian art market in Berlin. Sack traveled with the then Austrian consul in Athens, Georg Christian Gropius , through Greece and the Orient and during this time bought a collection of ancient artifacts, which he later bequeathed to the Antikensammlung in Berlin.

On his return trip in 1821 he collected contemporary folk music on Zakynthos for the diplomat and ancient historian Barthold Georg Niebuhr . The Royal Library of Berlin came into possession of the collection , which is now stored in the Jagiellonian University in Krakow after it was relocated from Berlin to Silesia during World War II . It has been scientifically evaluated since the beginning of the 21st century.

Sack made water samples from this trip to the Orient available to the Dresden researcher Heinrich Ficinus for analysis, thereby promoting his activities. Due to the reputation he gained, among other things, he was able to ensure that the gardener Ferdinand Deppe was able to take part in the expedition to Mexico initiated and financed by Sack in 1824 .
