Change of faction

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a faction change is referred to the possibility of MPs in Parliament , by a fraction to switch to another.

There have been many changes of faction in the history of the German Bundestag . Especially in the first two legislative periods, MPs from smaller parties mainly joined the CDU / CSU . However, the bills hardly caused a stir, as they never put the government in danger. However, when members of the SPD and FDP transferred to the CDU / CSU during the sixth legislative period, the social-liberal government lost its majority, which made early elections in 1972 inevitable. The faction transfers sparked passionate discussions.

There are also occasional changes in parliamentary groups in the state and local parliaments.

Examples of faction changes

The data manual of the German Bundestag contains a list of parliamentary group changes in the recent past.

For example, in the 16th electoral term 2005–2009, a total of three MPs changed their political group membership.

Criticism of the faction change

Changes of factions are allowed. It can be seen critically that votes are not only intended for the candidates, but also for a specific party, and that they are therefore passed on to a non-elected party.
