François-Rupert Carabin

François-Rupert Carabin (born March 17 or 27, 1862 in Zabern / Alsace , † November 28, 1932 in Strasbourg ) was a French artist.

He is mainly known for his woodwork. However, he was also active as a bronze caster and goldsmith, cutting gems , minting medals and making ceramics. He made designs for the furniture industry and also used the then new medium of photography.

Because of the Franco-German war , his family left Alsace and moved to Paris. His teacher at the Paris École des dessins was Jacques Perrin . In 1884, Carabin founded together with Georges Seurat . Paul Signac and Albert Dubois-Pillet created the “ Société des artistes indépendants ”. Since 1891 he has exhibited regularly at the Société nationale des beaux-arts .

In 1920 he was appointed director of the École supérieure des Arts décoratifs in Strasbourg.
