François David (born February 4, 1955 ) is a French theoretical physicist.

David studied physics from 1974 until his Agrégation in 1978 at the École normal supérieure (Paris) and from 1980 worked at the CNRS in the Service de Physique Théorique de Saclay (research center of the CEA in Saclay). In 1982 he received his doctorate (Thèse d'Etat: Problèmes Infra-Rouges en Théorie Perturbative des Champs) and was then at the Institute for Advanced Study (1983/84). Since 1989 he has been Research Director of the CNRS.

He deals with quantum field theory and statistical mechanics, for example random matrices and their connection with two-dimensional quantum gravity, two-dimensional random geometries (with application in statistical mechanics and quantum gravity), phase transitions in thin films and membranes, renormalization theory and renormalization groups, infrared divergence and non-perturbation effects in quantum theory open quantum systems and decoherence. statistical mechanics of various growth processes.

From 1989 to 1996 he was editor of the Journal de Physique / European Physics Journal. From 1996 to 2001 he headed the École de Physique des Houches . From 2002 to 2010 he was on the scientific committee of the Institut Henri Poincaré and from 1987 to 1995 in the section Theoretical Physics of the Comité National de la Recherche Scientifique.

In 1983 he received the bronze medal of the CNRS and in 1994 the Prix Ampère of the Académie des Sciences.
