Eugène Tamburlini (born December 20, 1930 in Arifates, Les Laubies , † October 25, 1959 in Troyes ) was a French cyclist.

Life

Eugène Tamburlini was the son of the Italian Paolo Tamburlini, who came from Friuli , and the French Marie Boulet from Saint-Amans ( Lozère ). In 1948 he made his debut as a cyclist and achieved some regional successes. He went to Paris in 1950 and did his military service the following year.

In 1953 and 1954 Tamburlini had a contract with the Peugeot team , for which the popular Belgian Stan Ockers also drove at this time . In 1954 he won the Tour de Champagne and the Daily Express Tour of Britain . The following year he was successful at the Circuit des Ardennes . Its nickname was Tambour (drum) , as the Luxembourg driver Charly Gaul is said to have named it.

In 1959, Eugène Tamburlini confessed in an interview that he had taken a doping agent before the Grand Prix des Nations the year before . Afterwards he was almost blind for a short time; since then he has never felt the same as before. He committed suicide on October 25 of the same year at the age of 28. He is buried next to his parents in the Les Laubies cemetery.

Commemoration

In Tamburlini's birthplace Les Laubies, the Cyclo-Club Mendois has been organizing the La Randonnée Cycliste Eugène-Tamburlini (La Tamburlini) tour since 2006 . The ninth edition took place in 2017; In 2008 family members from Tamburlini also took part. The community had a memorial stone for Tamburlini erected at the entrance to the cemetery .
