François de Poilly the Elder
François de Poilly the Elder (* around 1623 in Abbeville ; † April 1, 1693 in Paris ) was a French engraver, engraver and publisher.
He and his brother Nicolas de Poilly (1627–1696) were sons of the goldsmith Charles de Poilly († 1646). In 1638 he went to Paris to work with engraver Pierre Daret for three years before working with the printer and dealer Pierre Mariette (1603–1657).
1649–56 he spent in Rome, where he was friends with Pierre Mignard . He made reproductions of Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini , Alessandro Algardi , Salvator Rosa , Carlo Maratti , Raffael , Carracci and Guido Reni .
On February 24, 1665 Louis XIV granted him a privilege (similar to copyright) and on December 31, 1669 he appointed him engraver Ordinaire du Roi .
It attracted many talented students such as Gérard Edelinck (1640–1707). As he grew older, his style changed to the cold and monotonous.
