Francesco Antonio Bonporti (born June 11, 1672 in Trento , baptized; † December 19, 1749 in Padua ) was an Italian priest, violinist and composer of the Baroque era.

Life

Francesco Antonio Bonporti, who came from an aristocratic family, first studied theology in his hometown, before completing a doctorate in philosophy in Innsbruck. Further studies led him to Rome at the Collegium Germanium , where he was a student of Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni . During this time he may have had violin lessons from Arcangelo Corelli . Around 1700 he can be found again as a musician in the private band of Emperor Joseph I ; from 1715 to 1721 he worked in his native city of Trento, then in Padua.

His “Inventioni per Violino Solo”, published in Bologna in 1712, are significant, some of which have been preserved as copies of Johann Sebastian Bach (Nos. 2, 5 and 7) and were at times ascribed to him.
